Project-Up is happening May 17, 2014!

Project-Up will start at 9AM in UCSD's Bear room. Be sure to have a signed participation waiver and sign-in so that we will begin this action packed day! We will have workshops, student panels, a tour, FREE breakfast AND lunch, and lots of advice for future academic applicants. Please feel free to look around this page for more info on Project-Up, some tips on SAT/ACT, A-G requirements, cool links, and if you have some questions regarding mentors or life in general please send us an email! =)

Interactive UCSD Student Panel!

There are tons of alternative routes to become admitted into a prestigious 4-year university. Our panel of 4-5 UCSD students will talk about their experiences in getting into UCSD, the culture shock (if any), and how they adapted to the rigorous college workload while maintaining a healthy life-style. Afterwards the floor will be open to questions. We are a VERY diverse group of folks, so chances are at least one of the student in the panel or our volunteers have experienced the same worry you're going through right now. So please feel free to ask anything! And again, if you're too nervous to speak out loud, ask us in person during our lunchtime or ask your UCSD mentor when you get the chance.

UCSD Mentorship Program for High School students!

Have some personal questions that might not be appropriate to ask in front of everybody? Or you just thought of a college question and you need to know the answer right away? Worry not! Chicanos/Latinos for Community Medicine (CCM) will be your mentor! We will pair you up with one of the CCM members and you can ask them any question you like, whenever you like. You can ask for a mentor in project-up, or you can contact us in our "Contact Us" tab and let us know you are a high school student who is interested in a mentor.

Tour of UCSD!

UCSD has quite possibly one of the most beautiful campus compared to all the other universities. We're located near a beach, our library basically looks like a spaceship, and we have a tiny house on top of a building. Why? Because we are UCSD, that's why. This mini-tour will also take you inside our gigantic class auditorioms so you get a sense of what university life is like. The tour is a neat way to see what's up with UCSD =)

You should find out which classes are transferable! This page has all the helpful links that can aid you in planning out your college route =)

Workshop Topics

Some of you may be the first member of your family to be enrolled in a university and aren't completely sure what college is like. College is definitely different from high school and we will detail the differences in work load, dealing with home-sickness (it happened to some of us, could happen to you), and dealing with the culture shock of university life.

You might not feel prepared to tackle a CSU/UC right out of high school, and that's okay! There is a community college plan, you could get a part/full time job to save money for college, and there are more options out there. There's also a 2 year associates degree which can help you land a job quickly. We will discuss the pros and cons to each of them, and hopefully you will find a route that's perfect for you =)

1st Generation/Adapting to college

You just got used to the high school life, but now you are being asked to transition into college! So what's the big difference? There's a sharp contrast between high school and college: a greater degree of difficulty in academics, varying social pressures, choosing the right classes for you. Its stressful stuff and if not prepared it's very easy to start flipping tables in sheer rage. To avoid all that bad stuff we have useful tips on how to manage all of these pressures and become aware of the college lifestyle, thus helping you and saving defenseless tables =)

College applications are soon approaching and to ease future stress we will cover the financial aid process, points to an ideal personal statement, scholarships, and much more.
